HISTORY OF IMPACT
We have been placing community first from the very beginning. Founded in 1990, the Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corporation (HCRC) started as a group of banks working together to support local communities. Initially, we acted as a financial intermediary for affordable housing projects that banks were reluctant to fund.
Our success encouraged banks to become direct lenders in the long-term, fixed-rate affordable housing market. Today, HCRC continues to identify and address gaps in local financing to ensure community-focused enterprises, often overlooked by banks, can access the funding they need.
We’ve facilitated over $200 million in financing to support the development of over 3,500 affordable housing units in the State of Hawaii. We’ve secured $3.6 million in funding for small businesses through the SBA 504 Loan Program. We’ve also enabled over $4.8 million in energy efficiency loans through the DBEDT GreenSun loan loss reserve program and provided $2.2 million in loans to non-profit organizations to support their operations.
To help build the resources to find a long-term solution for the affordable housing challenges in Hawaii, we’ve gifted $790,000 to the University of Hawaii Foundation to establish an endowment for the Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corporation Distinguished Professorship in Affordable Housing.
